The Content AI Actually Cites

Short answer: AI systems do not quote the text that is best optimised for keywords — they quote the clearest, most structured and most fact-dense one. A direct answer up front, unambiguous wording, specifics instead of filler and clean markup are what raise your odds of appearing in a ChatGPT or AI-search answer.

Why the old SEO playbook only takes you so far

Classic SEO was built for decades around keywords and rankings — a person clicked a link and decided for themselves what in the article was useful. An AI works differently: it reads the whole page, picks out a specific fragment and drops it into its answer. If the text rambles, the answer is buried mid-paragraph and the facts are vague, there is nothing to quote — even when the page ranks respectably in ordinary search.

What makes content quotable

  • A direct answer at the start of the section, not after three paragraphs of background,
  • Concrete facts and data instead of general reasoning,
  • Clear structure — headings, lists, tables that break down into fragments cleanly,
  • Unambiguous wording, with no hedging and no filler,
  • Clean page markup that helps a system identify the type of content.

Quoted or ignored

Trait of the textUsually quotedUsually ignored
The answer to the questionin the first or second sentence of the sectionburied at the end of a long paragraph
Wordingconcrete and unambiguousvague, “it depends” with no explanation
Structuremeaningful headings, lists, tablesa wall of text with no subheadings
Factsbacked by specificsgeneral phrases with no substance
Length of the answera few sentences, quotable wholesmeared across several paragraphs
Question-then-direct-answer is the foundation for everything else
If a section clearly states a question and immediately gives a clear answer, that is exactly the unit of content an AI can lift and paste into its reply. Everything else — examples, details, caveats — comes after the direct answer, not instead of it. The same principle applied to getting quoted is in how to get cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity.

How this relates to GEO and SEO

Citability is the practical core of GEO, and it sits on top of an ordinary SEO foundation rather than replacing it. Where the two disciplines differ and why you need both is in GEO vs SEO, and the broader definition is in what GEO is. On the technical side, letting AI crawlers navigate the site is helped by llms.txt.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from ordinary SEO?

Traditional SEO is largely oriented around keywords and positions in a results list. AI systems choose what to quote based on how clear and fact-dense the text is — which overlaps with SEO but is not the same thing. The difference is laid out in GEO vs SEO.

Do we have to rewrite all our old content?

Not all of it at once. It makes sense to start with the pages that answer frequent audience questions and restructure those into question-then-direct-answer form, updating the rest gradually.

Does Schema.org markup help?

Yes. Structured markup makes it easier for AI systems and search engines to understand what is on the page — an answer to a question, a product, an article. It does not guarantee a citation, but it lowers the barrier to machine understanding.
